It's amazing how even in a small town in Japan, one can find really good food. We got around by asking both the hotel and the ski shop where we rented our gear for recommendations.
The first place we had dinner at was Aburiya, just a 10 min walk from our hotel (then again, everything is at most a 15 min walk from the center of town...). We almost walked past it because the entrance is hidden at the bottom of a 4 to 5 storey building (considered high-rise in Yuzawa!). Walking in to the small ~20 seater, we decided to sit at the counter so as to watch the chef cooking. We were the first ones in the restaurant, given that it was only 5.10pm and it had just opened.
Couldn't decide what to order, so just started with warm sake, and nibbled on the starter they gave us. We've eaten this slightly sticky, soft white thing before, but up to now have not figured out what exactly it is. The taste is slightly weird, so a little shoyu helps.
First up was the beef which was perfectly cooked medium rare and with a special sauce. Was pretty hungry so we finished it up really quickly. Would rate this as above average, but nothing compared to some of the other steaks that can be found in Japan. We had ordered "deep fried potatoes" and were expecting large hearty chunks, so were we were terribly surprised when what arrived was this plate of chips. Sure, they came hot and lightly salted, not too oily, but still... really not what we expected.
Next up was fish. This was really really good! Look at how the size of the fish compares with the normal set of chopsticks as well as the larger pair given. The skin-side was a little too overdone, but the sides of the fish were crispy and fatty. Yummy!
Our last dish was the breaded chicken stuffed with plum (ume). Wasn't very keen on this, I think the mix of flavours just didn't agree with us... Plus they had mixed in some green vegetable which I wasn't too fond of.
There was a really large group seated behind us, and they had ordered the nabe. Just looking at the large pot of meat and potatoes and thinking of the windy cold weather outside made us super envious and wishing we had the numbers to eat such a huge pot.
After concluding our dinner, it was time to brave the snow and ice for the short walk back, and head to the onsen!
