The Travel Bug: Lessons Learnt #1

Lesson learnt: Never assume that your shoes can withstand sub-zero temperatures.

Thinking that since Tokyo (like London) is a slightly more snobbish and well-dressed city, I happily wore my slightly more formal travelling shoes (the Footglove extra wide-fit) thinking it could double both at the ski resort and Tokyo.

Unfortunately the sub-zero temperatures made the soles and heels so terribly brittle (rubber??), that they literally crumbled to bits in less than an hour after we arrived at the ski resort. The metal pieces in the sole were exposed, the heel had cracked open and was disintegrating, leaving a little pile of debris on the carpet of the hotel!

I am very sad as it was my favorite pair of travel shoes, given that it was comfortable enough to walk around the whole day in, classy enough to wear with anything including work wear. Furthermore, as I was stuck in a little town which had ONE shoe shop, I was left with very little alternatives.

So please... take a moment to mourn for the passing of the old, and pause to admire my new waterproof boots, the most expensive pair of shoes I have ever bought in my life.
